St. Joe’s Basketball Team: Tryin’ Fo’ Help One Bruddah, But Feelin’ Lost Phil Martelli stay sittin’ back in his chair, lettin’ out one big sigh. He been scrolling tru his phone 📱, reading text messages dat wen go on fo’ two years now. All da texts stay coming from dis one guy and no responses from him. Da day nice an sunny ☀️ in New Jersey and jus last week, Martelli an his wahine Judy was enjoying da good kine weekend at Jersey Shore wit all their keiki an moopuna running around making choke noise.

But today? Da house quiet like nobody home 🏠 . All da kids wen leave already and everything feel heavy as he read the texts again from somebody he always thought of as ohana 👪 . Every message pretty much the same – begging for help or money 💵 , either to pay off some drug dealer or bartender or just to get off the streets. Martelli used to answer these cries for help; even send money when asked.

But then some therapists told him that instead of helping this person out, he was actually doing more harm than good 😔 . Then suddenly…da messages stopped coming in – with the last one received over a year ago saying “I’m really sad.” Martelli feeling plenty sad too 😢 . Guilt weighing down on top him hard like rock because there’s nothing else left fo do anymore! The coach who everybody know got jokes struggling find words during our hour-long talk story session cause sometimes…there just ain’t any right words you can say about something so pilau (rotten). About twenty years ago now ⌛ , Coach Martellli’s Saint Joseph Hawks basketball team had everybody watching college basketball stoked!

This small Catholic school team went 27-0 straight wins before going into the 2004 Elite Eight 🏀 . Two of their players even got drafted in the first round – something almost as unbelievable as their winning streak! One guy, Jameer Nelson, played 14 years in da NBA and now he assistant general manager for Philadelphia 76ers G League team, da Delaware Blue Coats. Da other guy? Delonte West.

Last we heard from him was when he sent those texts to Martelli.
