Listen Up: Saudi Arabia Border Patrols Accused of Committing Atrocities, Shooting African Migrants 🤯🔫

Hey there! There’s a shocking story unfolding all the way from the Middle East. According to a report from Human Rights Watch, hundreds of African migrants have been shot while attempting to enter Saudi Arabia from Yemen in the past 15 months. 😲💔

So here’s the lowdown. It’s not just gunfire that these border guards are using. They’re also brutally beating migrants with rocks and bars. 😱🪓 But the horror doesn’t stop there. They’ve been forcing male migrants to rape women while they watch, and then shoot the migrants in their limbs, causing permanent injuries and even amputations. 💔😭

Now, if all this turns out to be a Saudi government policy, it could amount to crimes against humanity, according to the report. 🚫👮‍♂️ However, the Saudi government has dismissed these allegations as false and unreliable. 🙄🤷‍♂️

The area where this is all happening is one of the world’s most perilous smuggling routes. It’s so isolated that journalists, aid workers, and other international observers can hardly get to it. 👀🔍 The report mainly focuses on Ethiopian migrants, who are among the most vulnerable, trying to get into oil-rich Saudi Arabia. 🛢️💸

Faisal Othman, an Ethiopian migrant, tried to cross the border with a group of about 200 people when an explosion occurred. The blast tore through the women in the group, killing many. He said they were “shredded like crushed tomatoes.” 😭💥

The background to all this is pretty grim. Many are fleeing Ethiopia due to poverty, drought, and political repression. They first head to Djibouti and are then smuggled into Yemen, a country already ravaged by war. 🛶🌍

Upon arriving in Yemen, the migrants often find themselves in territory controlled by the Houthi rebels, near the Saudi border. These rebels work with smugglers to corral large numbers of migrants into makeshift camps. 🏕️🤝 From these camps, migrants sometimes have to walk over six miles through harsh, mountainous terrain, only to face gunfire at the border. 🏞️🔫

Sadly, Yemen is no stranger to human rights abuses, but there’s been little accountability. 🤷‍♀️🚫 The last U.N. body responsible for monitoring such violations in Yemen ceased its activities in 2021, apparently due to pressure from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. 🇸🇦🇦🇪

Despite the long-standing nature of this violence, there has been no significant international effort to put an end to it. 🛑🤔 Abdulaziz Yasin, a prominent member of the Ethiopian community in Yemen, says that attacks on migrants are daily occurrences. “And who’s going to help us?” he asks. 🤷‍♂️😢

So that’s the sad story. There seems to be no international agency willing or able to intervene. 😔🌍 What will happen next is anyone’s guess. A heartbreaking farewell to those we’ve lost. 🌺💔
