Dish Network admitted they messed up wit their EchoStar-7 satellite and agreed to a compliance plan with the FCC.

Space junk is made up bits of tech that are floating around Earth but not being used anymore – risk collisions big time! Dis rubbish officially called space debris includes things like old satellites and parts of spacecraft. The FCC said that Dish’s satellite posed a potential risk to other satellites orbiting the Earth at its current altitude. EchoStar-7 was launched in 2002 into geostationary orbit starting at 22K miles above our planet’s surface.Dish was supposed to move it further from earth by another 186 miles but only managed about half because they ran out of fuel last year! As more people start launching stuff into space we gotta be sure everybody following rules, said FCC enforcement bureau chief Loyaan Egal.

This fine is a wake-up call to everyone that we serious about enforcing our space debris rules. The $150,000 fine might not seem like much for Dish who made over $16bn last year but it’s still a big deal.
