He went on Facebook and wrote: So proud to have my book Shopgirl banned in Collier County, Florida! Now people who want to read it will have to buy a copy!

Dis post wen get mo’ den 38,000 likes. Da school district wen remove da book aftah dis new law pass in Florida dat make um easier fo’ challenge any library book dat show or talk ’bout sexual stuffs.

And no jus Steve Martin’s book was affected by dis ban — oddah authors like Stephen King, Toni Morrison Ernest Hemingway and Alice Walker had their books taken out too. Dis action by da school district come aftah a new state law went into effect that give parents an easy way fo’ challenge any library materials dey tink inappropriate for kids unda eighteen years old.

Da superintendent for the county schools say dey going put together one committee made up of teachers and librarians fo’ review all these banned books again within sixty days. But if anybody still not happy wit their decision den can appeal again.

One local parent weh nevah like her name use tell Naples Daily News she think it good they taking out those kind stuffs from the libraries cause some things just not appropriate for young keiki (children). She feel dass why we get parental controls on our TVs!

Some folks online supporting this move saying that children need be protected from explicit content but oddas arguing back saying banning these books only limit access to important literature and stifles freedom of expression. Dis new law in Florida wen get passed aftah one group of parents wen challenge a book called Gender Queer dat was available in da school library.

Dey say dis book promote transgenderism and homosexuality to kids, but da district judge say it okay cause the book not obscene or harmful. Steve Martin’s novel Shopgirl is one romance story about a young woman named Mirabelle Buttersfield who work at Neiman Marcus department store.

And it’s not just Steve Martin’s book that was affected by this ban — other authors like Stephen King, Toni Morrison Ernest Hemingway and Alice Walker had their books taken out too. This action by the school district comes after a new state law went into effect that gives parents an easy way to challenge any library materials they deem inappropriate for kids under eighteen years old.
