📚📱💔 The News: Chris Paul Finds Out From His Son, Suns Trade ‘Em! 😱📚📱💔

Chris Paul, a twelve-time All-Star, was in the sky ✈️, flying to New York to promote his brand new book 📚 when he received a text from his fourteen-year-old son, Chris II. The text dropped a bombshell 💣: Paul had been traded! 😱

Paul, a true basketball player 🏀, is on top of the game and one of the best point guards ever seen in the NBA 🏀. He had just finished his third season with the Phoenix Suns ☀️, and they even made it all the way to the NBA Finals back in 2021. It seemed like there were plenty of green pastures ahead, right? But hold on tight, because the Suns agreed to trade him to the Washington Wizards for guard Bradley Beal. Beal is a three-time All-Star who will turn 30 next week, while Paul is 38. We don’t know yet where he will play next season, so it’s kind of mysterious, isn’t it? 🤔

When the New York Times caught up with Paul for an interview, he mentioned that Mat Ishbia, the new Suns team owner, and Hall of Fame point guard Isiah Thomas, who is close with Ishbia, wanted to go in a different direction. Where does Thomas stand? Ishbia had previously stated in February that Thomas no longer had a role with the team. The Suns and Thomas’ camp have not made any comments when reached out by the Times.

Paul spoke with the Times because he is promoting his book titled “Sixty-One: Life Lessons From Papa, On and Off the Court.” This book will hit the shelves this Tuesday and is a tribute to his grandfather, Nathaniel Jones. Paul describes him as an important figure in his life, someone he trusted with all his heart. Jones owned a service station, the first one owned by a Black person, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

About the book, Paul co-wrote it during the pandemic when he joined forces with ESPN host Michael Wilbon. They weaved together various stories about Paul’s grandfather and his own journey, especially being a Black athlete after George Floyd passed away.

The interview, edited for length and complexity, took place on Monday in New York at the Rubenstein PR office. They talked about the trade, Paul’s grandfather, and what he will do after he hangs up his NBA sneakers.

Imagine, you’re on a plane ✈️ the other night, and the team you helped bring so close to winning a championship announces to the world that they’re trading you. How would you feel? 😮

Paul grits his teeth. He says, “You know, I spoke to James Jones yesterday, and he didn’t say anything.” (Jones is the Suns’ president of basketball operations and general manager.)

So, James Jones didn’t give you any clue that this trade might happen? How surprised were you when you saw that text from your son? 😮

Paul shows his wife his phone and says, “I felt a shock, for real.” 🤯

I can see it, right? You’re trying not to talk all that trash right now. 😅

No, it’s not because I’m trying to hide something. It’s just how it is, as I said. But you know, Mat and Isiah, I guess they wanted to go a different way. 🤷‍♂️

Tell us, man, what would you like to happen now, in an ideal scenario? 🤔

I can’t say, brother. I haven’t had time yet to figure it out. This kind of thing affects more than just me. 🤷‍♂️

Brother, you recently said that you wanted to stay with the Suns. How do you feel about them now? 😕

As I said, Mat and Isiah wanted to go a different way. But the time I spent with the Suns was unreal, you know what I mean? It was unreal, it was awesome. So, I’m just going to get back to work. 💪

You could have written about anything, but you chose to write about your grandfather. Why? 📚

That’s a big thing in my life, you know? And now, I’m 38 years old, and I never thought I would have the chance to do all these things I have done. I look back and see how many things happened because my grandfather was with me. ❤️📚

How do you look at his death differently now that you’re 38, compared to when you looked at it as a teenager? 🤔

When I was writing this book, I brought up conversations I never really thought about or talked about for 20 years, you know? 📚

How difficult is it for you and your family to go back and remember the time he was murdered? 😔

I have some videos on my phone, you know? From when I recorded the audiobook. And when I was doing that, there were times I broke down, I couldn’t handle it. 😢

Would you like to remember a time after 20 years? Do you want to get your grandfather’s guidance? 🤔

Maybe when I was in college, after that Julius Hodge incident. I got suspended for one game, you know? (Back in 2005, Paul looked like he punched below the waist of Julius Hodge from North Carolina State during the last game of the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season.) 😬

How do you think he would have reacted? 🗣️

I can’t say, brother. I don’t think he would have gone all nuts. But, you know, this whole thing happened because kids started to chant, “I killed your grandfather.” If he were here, they wouldn’t have said that. 😔

One thing I read in the book, one interesting thing, is when you shared about George Floyd’s death. You told a story about getting pulled over in Los Angeles. Can you describe the anxious feeling you had? 😨

I was cruising on the 405, you know? But at that time, there was construction, and the road was narrowed down to one lane. I was just trying to get home and got pulled over by the police. The feeling was…
