🐦💬Evaluating the Activity of 15 Top Twitter Celebrities on Threads

We set out to observe the daily activities of figures like Ellen DeGeneres, Wiz Khalifa, Selena Gomez, and many other high-profile Twitter users to discern whether Threads, the new social app from Meta, has potential for long-term popularity. Threads had an impressive launch this month with 100 million downloads in less than a week. Despite its initial momentum, it’s unclear whether Threads can sustain its success and compete with Twitter. 🚀📲

While rapid downloads indicate an initial surge of interest, it doesn’t guarantee the app’s long-term success. Hence, we pondered the question: Does Threads have staying power?

We initiated an experiment, tracking 15 of the most-followed celebrities and influencers on Twitter who joined Threads, including Katy Perry, Ellen DeGeneres, Bill Gates, Britney Spears, Shakira, and Oprah Winfrey. We compared their activity on Twitter with their activity on Threads each day since July 5, when Threads was launched. We also considered their activity on Instagram, which is owned by Meta and serves as the platform where Threads was created. 🧪🔍

The goal was to see which social platform engaged the celebrities most. Although our findings offer a limited snapshot, they may provide some insights into the future of Threads.

Many celebrities were quick to embrace Threads.
DeGeneres, a Twitter user since 2008, hasn’t tweeted since late April. As soon as Threads was launched, she was among the first 3,000 people to download the app. 📈📲

“Welcome to Gay Twitter!” she posted on Threads on July 5, quickly garnering over 7,000 replies.

Out of the 15 celebrities we tracked, DeGeneres was one of three who stopped posting on Twitter in recent months and started engaging actively on Threads. The others were Selena Gomez, who hadn’t tweeted since late May, and Winfrey, who hadn’t posted on Twitter since January. Gomez used Threads to greet her fans, while Winfrey used it to promote a musical remake of the film “The Color Purple,” which she produced. 🎥🎶

Other celebrities, like Demi Lovato, began posting more frequently on Threads than on Twitter. In the first week following Threads’ release, Lovato made six posts on Threads and responded to two comments on her posts, but only made a single Twitter post to promote the rock version of her hit song “Sorry Not Sorry.” 🎤🎸

Lovato used Threads to interact with her fans, asking them for music recommendations and thread puns, despite having significantly fewer followers on the app compared to Twitter. As of Wednesday, she had two million followers on Threads and 53 million on Twitter. 🤩📊

Wiz Khalifa was the most active on Threads, though his engagement eventually declined. The rapper was the only celebrity we followed who published a double-digit number of posts on any given day on Threads. Among the celebrities we followed, Khalifa was by far the most active on Threads, posting original content and sharing other users’ messages and replies. 🎧📝

Khalifa, whose real name is Cameron Jibril Thomaz, posted an average of 38 times per day on Threads in the first two weeks following the app’s launch, compared to an average of five posts per day on Twitter.

His Threads posts typically combined text, photos, and videos with tidbits about his personal life. “Proudly bringing the weed to threads,” he wrote in his inaugural post on July 5, accompanying the text with a short video of him lighting a joint. 📸🌿

However, the rapper’s activity on Threads gradually decreased. He replied to over 100 posts — mostly responses to his own posts — in the first week after Threads was launched. That number declined in the second week, along with fewer original posts and shares.

Starting on July 16, he ramped up his activity on Twitter, sometimes posting more than 10 times per day. He remains more active on Threads but has begun publishing similar content on both platforms. 🔄🗣️

Some celebrities have started treating Threads and Twitter identically. 🐦💬

Is there a difference between Threads and Twitter? Not according to Jimmy Fallon, Shakira, or Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan.

In the past three weeks, they were among the celebrities who posted identical or nearly identical content on both Twitter and Threads. This suggests they may not distinguish between the platforms and use both as broadcast tools. 📡💻

On July 12, for example, Fallon retweeted a congratulatory message to “That’s My Jam,” a game show he hosts, for an Emmy Award nomination. He posted the same message on Threads, but without the hashtags he used in his Twitter post. He hasn’t posted on Twitter or Threads since. 🏆🎉

From July 6 to July 13, Shakira posted a series of pictures on Threads, including from a Fendi fashion show, a photo of herself and songwriter David Stewart, and images of her in London — all of which she also posted on Twitter with identical captions.

Khan shared posters of his upcoming movie “Jawan” on Twitter, Threads, and Instagram, all with the same captions. However, he seems to have a slight preference for Twitter: On July 13, he used the “AskSRK” hashtag on the platform for fans to ask him questions about the movie. 🎬🎥

Instagram wins! 🎉📸
