๐จ๐จ๐ Fresh Makeover for a Belle รpoque Hotel in Biarritz
Last year, the hospitality company, Experimental Group, purchased the 1907 Regina Hotel & Spa. This beauty from the Belle รpoque era is perched atop a cliff overlooking the Bay of Biscay. They transformed it into the Regina Experimental hotel, set to open next month. The French designer, Dorothรฉe Meilichzon, was responsible for renovating the interiors, drawing inspiration from the Basque and Paquebot (ocean liner) Art Deco movements, known for their curvy forms, long lines, and nautical features โ๐ผ๏ธ.
The original glass-ceiling atrium ๐ houses a lounge space and a bar with a central piano ๐น, while the wraparound corridors above lead to the hotel’s 72 rooms ๐๏ธ. Inside, design details in the rooms include marine stripes, Japanese straw mirror frames, and Meilichzonโs signature whimsical headboards (this time made of wood lacquered in a light blue color) ๐ช. Outdoors, there’s a pool ๐โโ๏ธ, an orangery ๐, and the Golf du Phare golf course โณ.
Perhaps one of the biggest attractions is the restaurant, Frenchie Biarritz. This is the latest outpost from the Paris-based chef, Gregory Marchand, who also collaborated with Experimental for the group’s hotels in Paris’s Pigalle neighborhood and Verbier, Switzerland ๐ผ๐จ๐ญ. Marchand plans to focus the menu on Basque cuisine ๐ฅ, sourcing ingredients from throughout the region, including trout from the village of Banka and black pork from Gascony ๐๐.
And if the Regina is fully booked, Experimental has a second property just a short walk away: the 27-room Le Garage. It was converted from an old classic car park ๐ and opened in 2022. The Experimental Regina is set to open on July 7, with prices starting from $320 a night ๐ต๐.
