🍑 Georgia Supreme Court Tells No Can Do, Won’t Squash Investigation On Trump 😲

Hello brothers and sisters! 🤙 It seems the big shot in Georgia isn’t letting Trump get away, right? The Georgia Supreme Court said “no can do” to a major attempt by Trump’s legal team to halt an investigation into whether he and his pals interfered in the 2020 election. 😱

ATLANTA — There was plenty of action on Monday as the Georgia Supreme Court said “no can do” to a long-shot attempt from former President Donald J. Trump’s lawyers to halt an investigation into election trouble just before some serious indictment decisions are supposed to be made. 🏛️

The court’s statement was unanimous and swift, coming just three days after Mr. Trump’s lawyers submitted their documents. They were hoping for a court order to discard all the work of a special grand jury in Atlanta and to disqualify Fani T. Willis, the district attorney of Fulton County, from the proceedings. Willis has been the prosecutor in charge of the investigation into whether Trump and his allies caused any kind of trouble in the 2020 election in Georgia. 🗳️

Most of the nine justices on the court were initially appointed by Republican governors. Until now, the case has been proceeding in the Superior Court in Atlanta. 🏛️

Trump’s lawyers conceded in their documents that the odds were against them. They couldn’t find “no case in 40 years” where the court had intervened in the way they were requesting. In their decision, the justices said that Trump’s team hadn’t demonstrated that this case was one of those extremely rare situations where this court should get involved. As a result, the petition was dismissed. 👋

The justices also said that Trump’s lawyers hadn’t presented “the facts or the law” necessary to require Willis’s disqualification. 📜

Previously, Trump’s lawyers attempted to halt the investigation with a motion filed in March, aiming to quash much of the evidence that Willis and her team had collected since the start of the investigation in early 2021 and to remove Willis from the case. But the Superior Court judge handling the case, Robert C.I. McBurney, has yet to make a ruling. ⚖️

“Trapped between a do-nothing supervising judge and a district attorney ready to bring charges, the petitioner has no other option but to seek this court’s intervention,” the lawyers wrote in their documents to the state’s high court on Friday. 📚

The lawyers could not be reached immediately on Monday; the district attorney’s office had nothing to say right away. 🕗

Ms. Willis has signaled that any indictments will come in the first half of August. She recently asked judges in a downtown Atlanta courthouse to refrain from scheduling trials during that time as she prepares to bring charges. The investigation has been looking into whether the former president and his allies illegally interfered in the 2020 election in Georgia, where Trump lost narrowly to Joe Biden. 👀

The special grand jury heard evidence for roughly seven months and recommended indictments of more than a dozen people; its lead strongly hinted in an interview with The New York Times in February that Mr. Trump was among them. To bring any charges, Ms. Willis must now seek indictments from a regular grand jury. 📰

So, hold onto your flip-flops, everyone! 🌴 This story is getting more interesting, isn’t it? Let’s wait and see what happens next! ⏳
