NFL Goes Big in Africa! League Launches First Official Events on the Continent 🌍🏈
Hey there, folks! The NFL is making major moves by launching its first-ever official events in Africa, kicking off on June 21 in Ghana. The week-long extravaganza, dubbed “NFL Africa: The Touchdown,” is packed with activities including a talent identification camp, a fan event, and a flag football clinic. This initiative highlights the NFL’s dedication to nurturing its growing fan base across the continent. 🌍🎉
With a roster boasting over 100 players of African descent, either born on the continent or as first-generation Americans, the league is set to spotlight the incredible talents of its African players. It’s all about introducing the sport to the next generation of fans and laying the groundwork for future activations in other African countries.
The event will see on-site participation from current NFL stars such as Uchenna Nwosu of the Seattle Seahawks (Nigeria), Ogbonnia Okoronkwo of the Houston Texans (Nigeria), Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah of the Cleveland Browns (Ghana), and Kwity Paye of the Indianapolis Colts (Liberia). Joining them are NFL legends Mathias Kiwanuka (Uganda), Roman Oben (Cameroon), and Osi Umenyiora (Nigeria).
As the league aims to discover and nurture more talent in Africa, it will host its inaugural NFL Africa Camp, featuring 40 players from across the continent. The camp, scheduled for June 21 and 22, will feature athletes selected from regional camps led by Osi Umenyiora, NFL legend and two-time Super Bowl-winning defensive end with the New York Giants. “This is a truly remarkable initiative,” Umenyiora stated. “This camp is not just offering opportunities to exceptional African athletes but also highlighting the incredible African athletes already in the NFL. The impact of this is immense.”
Umenyiora’s football program, The Uprise, based in Nigeria, has conducted regional camps in Ghana, Nigeria, and South Africa recently. Standout players from these camps have been invited to the NFL’s forthcoming camp in Ghana.
“We are excited to host our first camp in Ghana and plan to extend our activities to Nigeria and other African countries in the future,” said Damani Leech, NFL Chief Operating Officer of International. “Our goal is to provide a platform for the next generation of African prospects to showcase and hone their talents. As we continue to strengthen the international player pipeline, we hope this camp and future ones will offer a pathway for aspiring players across the continent. The top talent from the camp could be invited to participate in International Combines, the International Player Pathway program, and for athletes aged 16 to 19, the NFL Academy in London.”
This year, three players discovered through The Uprise and who participated in the International Combine and IPP Pro Day have signed with NFL teams – Chigbo Roy Mbaeteka (New York Giants), Haggai Chisom Ndubuisi (Arizona Cardinals), and Kehinde Hassan Oginni (Kansas City Chiefs).
The festivities in Ghana continue on Saturday, June 25, with the NFL hosting an NFL FLAG Day at the Ghana International School in partnership with the Ghana American Football Federation (GAFF). Students from 10 local schools, aged 12 to 14, will take part. NFL FLAG is an engaging and accessible non-contact program where participants learn the fundamentals from current and former NFL players, emphasizing teamwork and sportsmanship.
On Sunday, June 26, the NFL Fan Zone will immerse attendees in the world of the NFL from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City Accra in Ghana. This complimentary event allows fans to engage with current NFL players and legends while enjoying interactive games and activations by NFL partners including EA Madden, Mitchell & Ness, and Wilson Football. The NFL Fan Zone will also showcase a display featuring Super Bowl rings and the Vince Lombardi Trophy. 🏆
The NFL FLAG Day and NFL Fan Zone will additionally feature Philadelphia Eagles cheerleaders, alongside prizes and giveaways from the team. The Eagles’ Senior Vice President of Media & Marketing, Jen Kavanaugh, will be in attendance as the Eagles are the pioneering NFL club to venture into the African market through the International HMA initiative, starting in Ghana from June 1.
The NFL Network will document the journey of NFL players and legends as they partake in events in Ghana and immerse themselves in the local culture of Accra and the Cape Coast for an upcoming feature.
The NFL is committed to creating a positive impact in local communities following its international events. More details about a project in Accra will be revealed during the week’s activities.
